How to Sell Products Online: A Beginner’s Guide to Getting Started

Selling products online is not about having a perfect website on day one. It’s about finding one product people already want, listing it where buyers already search, and learning from your first 10 sales.

This is a practical beginner’s guide with no big upfront investment.

Step 1: Decide What to Sell First

Don’t start with 50 products. Start with 1 to 3 related products you understand.

Best beginner product types for low budget:

1. Products you already own or can source cheap: Secondhand clothes, books, kids items, small electronics you don’t use. $0 to start.

2. Small, light, non-breakable products: Phone accessories, beauty tools, kitchen gadgets, socks, tote bags, stationery. Cheap to ship, low return rate.

3. Products you can make at home: Baked goods for local delivery, handmade soap, candles, henna art, custom mugs with vinyl, digital planners.

4. Print-on-demand: You design a graphic in Canva, a company like Printful prints it on a t-shirt or mug only when someone orders. No inventory.

Avoid for beginners: Heavy furniture, large fragile items, products that need refrigeration, products with many sizes at first, and branded products you don’t have permission to sell.

Quick validation test: Search your product idea on Facebook Marketplace, Avito, Jumia, or Etsy. If there are 50+ listings and recent sold items, there is demand. If there are zero listings, demand may be too low.

Step 2: Choose Where to Sell — Start Where Buyers Already Are

Don’t build a Shopify store on day one unless you already have traffic. Start on a marketplace.

For physical products locally:

  • Facebook Marketplace + WhatsApp Business: Fastest for local sales, no fees, cash or bank transfer. Best for secondhand, food, handmade.
  • Avito / Jumia / Instagram Shop: Good for new small products in Morocco and many countries.
  • Etsy: Best for handmade, vintage, custom gifts, and digital products. Buyers expect to pay more for unique items.

For print-on-demand and digital:

  • Etsy + Printful / Redbubble / Gumroad

When to get your own store: After 20-30 sales and you know which product sells best. Then you can add a simple store on Shopify, WordPress, or even just a Google Form linked to WhatsApp.

Step 3: Create a Listing That Actually Sells

Buyers decide in 10 seconds. Your photos and first 2 lines do most of the work.

1. Photos — 4 minimum, phone is enough:

  • Photo 1: Product on clean, bright background, front view
  • Photo 2: Product being used or held
  • Photo 3: Close-up of quality/detail
  • Photo 4: Size comparison or what’s included
  • Take in daylight near a window, no clutter, no filter. Iron clothes before photographing.

2. Title — Clear, not clever: Bad: “Beautiful Lovely Top!!!” Good: “Women’s Cotton T-Shirt – Black – Size M – 100% Cotton”

Formula: What it is + Key material/feature + Size/color + Use

3. Description — Answer questions before they are asked:

  • What is it exactly?
  • What is it made of?
  • Measurements in cm
  • Condition: New / Like New / Used
  • What it is good for
  • What’s included and what is not
  • Delivery options

Example:

Women’s tote bag – natural canvas – 38x42cm. Strong straps, inner pocket. Good for market, books, laptop. New with tag. Price does not include delivery. Delivery via Amana or local pickup in.[city]

4. Price — Simple formula: (Product Cost + Packaging + Delivery Cost + Platform Fee) + Your Profit = Price Start with 30-50% profit margin. For secondhand, check similar sold listings and price 10% lower to sell faster at first.

Step 4: Set Up Payments and Delivery

Payments:

  • Local: Cash on delivery, bank transfer, MoPay/Wafacash, or Wave. Offer 2 options.
  • Online: PayPal, Payoneer, or Etsy Payments for international. Set up before listing.
  • Always get 50% upfront for custom orders.

Delivery:

  • Start with local pickup and one courier. In Morocco, options like Amana, Cathedis, or local moto delivery.
  • Weigh and measure your product with packaging. Know delivery cost before you price.
  • Packaging: Reuse clean boxes at first, add tissue paper for handmade. For $5 you can buy 10 poly mailers and thank-you cards — looks professional.

Policy: Write short, clear rules: “Returns within 3 days if damaged, photo required. No returns on custom items.”

Step 5: Get Your First 10 Sales Without Paid Ads

Paid ads are not needed for beginners. Use free traffic:

1. WhatsApp Business: Create catalog with photos, prices, auto-reply: “Hello, thanks for contacting. Delivery 2-3 days. Payment:…” Share status daily — not 10 times, just 1 good photo + price.

2. Facebook Groups and Marketplace: Post in 2-3 local buy/sell groups. Don’t spam. Post once with good photos, then reply to comments quickly.

3. Instagram: Post 3x per week: product photo, product in use, customer review. Use 5-7 local hashtags like #shopping #handmade. Reply to DMs within 2 hours.[city]

4. Ask for reviews: After each sale, ask: “If you liked it, could you send a short review and photo I can share?” Reviews sell more than ads.

Step 6: Track Money and Restock Smartly

Open a simple Google Sheet with columns: Date / Product / Cost / Sale Price / Delivery / Profit / Customer

After 10 sales, you will see:

  • Which product sells fastest
  • Which photo gets most messages
  • What questions buyers keep asking — add those answers to description

Only then buy more inventory, and only of the best seller. Don’t reinvest in products that didn’t sell.

Common Mistakes Beginners Make

1. Starting with too many products. 1 great listing beats 20 bad listings. Focus.

2. Bad photos. Blurry, dark photos = no sales. Daylight + clean background = sales.

3. No measurements. “Size M” means different things. Always add cm.

4. Waiting for a perfect logo/website. A WhatsApp catalog with clear prices makes money faster than a beautiful website with no traffic.

5. Forgetting profit. Selling a product for $10 that cost $8 + $3 delivery = losing money. Always calculate.

Your 7-Day Launch Plan

Day 1: Choose 1 product, research 10 similar listings, note their prices. Day 2: Take 10 good photos, measure product, write title and description. Day 3: Create WhatsApp Business catalog and one marketplace listing — Facebook Marketplace + Etsy or Avito. Day 4: Share listing with 10 friends and in 2 local groups. Ask for feedback. Day 5-6: Reply to all messages fast, pack first order, deliver. Day 7: Ask for review, update listing with FAQ, list second product only if first got interest.

Selling online is a skill you learn by doing. List one product today with good photos and a clear price. Your first sale will teach you more than weeks of planning. Start small, track profit, and double down on what actually sells.
